If you’re staying in Rockport, Texas and wondering what’s actually worth doing with kids nearby, Port Aransas ended up being one of our favorite family days during our month-long stay.
We had heard about the ferry, but nothing prepared us for how fun it would be — especially for the kids.
The Port Aransas Ferry Experience
We took the ferry over to Port Aransas, and right away it felt like an adventure. None of us had ever done anything like this before, and the kids were glued to the railings the entire ride.
And then… dolphins.
We could see dolphins swimming right from the ferry, which instantly made the whole experience feel magical. It was one of those moments where you’re not rushing, not planning, just standing there soaking it in while your kids are absolutely losing their minds in the best way.

Once we got over, we planned a simple stop at the community pool — and this might have been one of the biggest surprises of the day.
Kids were $1.
Adults were $2.
For a clean, fun place to cool off, that felt like an absolute steal. The kids had a blast, and it was the perfect way to reset before continuing our day.
Candy, Food, and Walking by the Water
Port Aransas is packed with places to eat, and of course we stopped at a candy shop (Beware… you’ve been warned). Between grabbing snacks, walking around town, and just enjoying the laid-back coastal vibe, it felt like an easy, no-stress family outing.
The Playground and Dolphin’s Playground
One of the highlights was the playground near the water — it looked brand new and was such a great place for the kids to burn off energy. But the real magic happened when we kept walking along the water. If you walk down a bit, you’ll find an opening where boats come in and out, and locals call it Dolphin’s Playground. We saw SO many dolphins there. Way more than we expected.
The kids were completely over the moon. Hands down, one of our favorite days so far.

At sunset we went over to Port Aransas Nature Preserve and enjoyed a little walk around the area. There's some great spots to see a lot of birds! It was a nice relaxing night!
Our Honest Recommendation
After seeing so many dolphins between the ferry and Dolphin’s Playground, we honestly didn’t feel the need to book a dolphin boat tour.
If you’re traveling with kids, I would highly recommend doing:
Port Aransas ferry
Dolphin’s Playground
Texas State Aquarium (more on that next)
It gave us an unforgettable experience without overplanning or overspending — which is exactly how we love to travel as a family.
